    Whalen Coincidence

Here’s a story that occurred at SuperBowl 2006, from Ed McDevitt..

For the past couple of years I’ve been driving a limo sedan, having been dragooned into the business by friends. It has actually been a great experience. Most of our customers are sports figures and we all enjoy the work.

Our small company (three regular drivers plus a number of affiliated drivers) took four cars to Detroit for SuperBowl 2006. An affiliate in California had asked us to be the main ground transportation for one of the media companies, which had a team of salespeople going to the game with their customers - 24 people in all.

My first pickup at Detroit Airport and I, while waiting forever for his luggage, got into a conversation about baseball. He told me he’d been to the 4th game of the Red Sox World Series in 2004. I told him I’d been to Game 3, and asked if he’d gone because he was a Red Sox fan. “Of course,” he said. “I grew up in Boston.” I told him I had grown up in the area as wall. “Where?” he asked. “Belmont,” I said, “just west of Boston.”

“Really!” he said. “Belmont. Do you know Audrey Whalen?”

I about fell over. “I do!” I said when my jaw returned from the floor. “She’s a high-school classmate!”

“Well, she’s my mother-in-law,” he told me.

I remained stunned for a couple of days.
